Thu, Mar 6 - On the river again

The usual drill: up at 4:45, breakfast and off at six in the boats.  This morning it was quite chilly - actually 70, but we’re used to higher temperatures.  We motored up the Menanggul River noticing that with the drought here the river is quite low and leaves are dropping from the trees.

The birds were very quiet today and didn’t respond to Rose Ann’s tapes.  The boatmen took us up to the last navigable part of the river which, with the lack of rain, is shallow and full of exposed and hidden fallen trees.  We managed to lose a piece off our propeller after one collision, but fortunately have two outboards.  We returned at 11.

Stork-billed Kingfisher

After lunch and nap we all took off in the boats upriver and turned off onto a fast moving stream leading from our river into an ox bow lake.  It was quite lovely and we were the only people there.  We watched birds and saw a Bearded Pig and returned to the hotel at 6:30.
An interesting caterpillar
We noticed on the white board that keeps track of the various species seen by different groups that one party listed was that of Sir David A & Lady A!!  After our dinner some of our group returned to look for an owl that sits on the boat dock and found Attenborough having a private dinner in our pavilion with his entourage!
